PRESENTATION
Even in a critical situation, such as the one that the agricultural sector and the agri-food system as a whole are experiencing, the most aware operators know that the future is not built just by standing still and calling for aid and subsidies, but above all by investing in innovation, to modernize their plants and reduce costs, in training to constantly improve their professional skills and in commercial promotion of their production, facing the new challenges of globalization.
And this also applies to the chestnut sector which, in Campania, through the District of Chestnuts and Marroni of Campania, has intended to attack the crisis, aiming:
- to improve the conditions of the chestnut groves through interventions that can no longer be postponed, consisting of the modernization of the plants, the introduction of sustainable innovation in cultivation techniques, the improvement of the skills of the operators through continuous training;
- to rationalize and improve the legal framework of the rules that regulate the complex system of fruit chestnut cultivation, always seen as an agricultural sector but with a strong forestry and environmental component;
- to try to recover competitiveness on the national and international markets of the Campania product through a strong action of valorization and promotion.
From this last point of view, the awareness that only the protection brands and geographical indications can offer the best opportunities, being able to guarantee the origin of the product and food safety, is prevailing among the operators.
A brand, such as the DOP and IGP, which can allow the consumer not only to associate the product he buys with the territory where it is produced, but also to provide him with reliability and certainty on the method of obtaining it, through certification.
This policy of relaunching the valuable Campania chestnuts has already been started and the establishment of the three Consortia for the protection of the IGP Castagna di Montella, Marrone di Roccadaspide and Marrone di Serino will strengthen the promotion and enhancement activities.
The recent registration of the IGP Castagna di Roccamonfina will also expand the areas protected with the prestigious European brand and consequently, an intense action of registration of the chestnut groves to the new certification system has started, also in this area.
The District, in collaboration with local authorities (Park, GAL, Province, Mountain Communities and the interested Municipalities) and trade organizations, has promoted the project of a fifth PGI to protect the denomination “Castagna del Partenio”, which will allow, within a few years, to have a potential production basin of over 80% of the Campania chestnut area with a community brand.
An ambitious but achievable goal, which will be able to distinguish almost the entire Campania chestnut-growing area of value and contribute to the relaunch of Campania chestnuts and marrons in economic terms and sustainable development.
